Hurstleigh-a place for independent living

The Hurstleigh independent living retirement apartments in Shire Lane are in the heart of Chorleywood village, close to the shops and amenities. There are 20 one-bedroom apartments, many of which overlook a large attractive garden, including two larger apartments suitable for a couple.

We encourage residents to remain active and independent in a happy retirement.
To apply to become a resident you must be 60 years old or above, in good health and have a sponsor who can act on your behalf should you become unable to look after yourself, as we are not a care home.
Hurstleigh is managed by trustees and a management committee of local residents, who give their time and expertise to provide a secure home for retired people.

Our History
The charitable trust was established in 1966 by Chorleywood residents who recognised that with property prices rising it was difficult for people to retire and live in the area near family and friends.
Great effort was made to raise funds to buy the original house and local people worked in their spare time to renovate it.  When the house opened there were only six residents and soon more space was needed.  The village raised more money for the extensions to the house to increase capacity to 20 apartments.

The present
Today, the flats are continually updated and redecorated as they change hands. Recent work has also been done on landscaping the gardens, renovating the car park, building a new front wall, renovating a large section of the roof, and installing a new lift. So the work continues, but it is little compared to the initial efforts of the founders and the local community in establishing Hurstleigh.

What accommodation does Hurstleigh provide?
The Hurstleigh apartments are all self contained to give residents their independence, and unfurnished so they can have their favourite furniture and comforts around them. The accommodation includes lounge, kitchenette, bedroom and bathroom with a walk-in shower.  The utilities are all electric for simple daily living, and there is a lift to upper floors for easy access.
The charges which residents pay are set to cover the costs and maintenance.

Value your privacy, meet your neighbours
Residents have the benefit of privacy with their own front door and when they want to socialise there is a large conservatory overlooking the terrace and garden, and smaller recreation room. Residents can meet in the conservatory for morning coffee and afternoon tea and those residents who wish to can join a social lunch in the dining room several times a week. The wardens plan and arrange entertainment and other events through the year for residents who like to take part.

Enjoy the garden

The house is set in beautiful south-facing gardens and residents can enjoy the garden from the large terrace, stroll in the garden or even join in with the gardening.
